"Prost to Bob" Robert Leroy Fritz was born on May 29, 1939 and died on April 28, 2026. He was 86. He was an owner of Robert "Chick" Fritz, established in 1947. "Chick" was actually my grandfathers nickname for eating the most fried chicken at a picnic. Dad could eat, but nothing like Pappy could. Dad's obituary is published, no sense in repeating it. Bob was one of the last Beer Man Legends left. My grandfather started in business in Mascoutah in a small garage, serving ice and coal. Bob lead the business to many levels of expansions, from the 60's/70's on. He always believed in customer service for all accounts. "Your friendly Beer Distributor" wasn't just a slogan., it was a motto he lived by. He never met a stranger. He had a wide range of friends, many are characters, across the Metro-East, and Springfield. He was a motivator, driving force, organizer, and accomplished what he set out to do. He was civic minded, and volunteered much. There are no days off in the beer business. There are famous stories at many bars, and his many friends can tell you them. He was a bit of a character. He had presence when he walked into an account, strong hand shake, and his voice cares well; (Old German). "Vee gates" Let's have a beer, I've got time," & anyone up for Euchre?", is just a few of the many lines he said. His German speaking skills mimicked Hogan Heros tv show. He believed cell phones & photos ruins the bar business- es. "Guys are not allowed to have beers after work, without their wives or girlfriends track- ing them down.":). He would always leave the account waving and saying "Keep the Faith." Growing up with Bob, as your dad, was comical at times, to say the least. He thought keeping us so busy working since a early teenager would keep us home, out of trouble, and too tired to go out at night. I proved him wrong a many times.:) Funny stories included: letting me use his Riveria on a date, and he ran out of gas the next morning going to work and it was my fault.:). Injuring my arm skiing on Carlye lake, his first response was, "Who is going to run your route tomorrow, and yelled at my brother for letting me ski on a "treacherous lake:" :). Even on pay day he would joke with me, "pay isn't much, but the fringe benefits are fantastic". Haha. After graduating from college, I only lived at home for 2 months. His funny words were "you need to move out, you are coming home way too late and loud". As I would feel his car hood is still warm, and he only beat me home by a hour or 2 at most, those nights We had our differences, but we did apologize to each other right before he passed. Hunting was fun with him. He wasn't a good shot and blamed the sun was in his eyes.:) If he ever bought you a beer, and he would not let you buy one at all that night; here is your chance to buy him one back.....
